The United States wants to offer a third dose of the corona vaccine to its population. That is unlikely to happen in Norway now, health director Bjørn Guldvog believes.

As early as September 20, all Americans will have the opportunity to get a third dose of the coronavirus vaccine. The reason is that the vaccine’s effect against COVID-19 decreases over time.

Health Director Bjørn Guldvog, on the other hand, doubts the need for a third dose in Norway.

“Basically, we do not think many people need it today,” Guldvog told NTB.

Might be offered to some

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI) monitors the vaccine effect on a sample of vaccinated people, Guldvog pointed out.

So far, these studies have not shown any major decline in immunity over time.

“It can be expected that some of those in the oldest groups, who normally have a lower immune response, will have weakened protection in the future. Then it may be relevant to consider a third dose,” Guldvog said.

In addition, some particularly vulnerable patient groups may be considered for third doses, he added.
