This year’s whaling season starts this week. The number of boats that participate drop by half between 2015 and 2019. Last year, 503 whales were caught.

Whaling seasons kick off on Thursday, and 13 boats have signed up. That is a small increase after the number of vessels that participated in the season dropped from 21 to 10 between 2015 and 2019.

The figures for last year’s whaling season showed a slight upswing from 2019. In 2020, 503 whales were caught, compared to 429 whales in 2019.

“I hope and believe that the upward trend will continue this year,” Minister of Fisheries and Seafood Odd Emil Ingebrigtsen (H) told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK).
