There are currently 3,079 inmates in Norwegian prisons – 23.5% are foreign nationals

At the beginning of January, there were 3,079 inmates in Norwegian prisons. Out of the total, 564 were in detention. The occupancy rate in prisons amounted to 85%. The clear majority of inmates are men.

Only 163 of the inmates are women, which is 5.3%, according to figures from the Norwegian Correctional Service (Kriminalomsorgen) as of January 5.

Furthermore, 724 inmates (23.5%) of the inmates are foreign nationals. Among those sentenced to detention, there are 143 men and seven women.

There are four inmates under 18 years of age. One of them is serving a sentence, while the other three are in custody. All of them are in youth units.
