According to a recently published study, the number of Tromsø residents with diabetes doubled from 1994 to 2016.

“Over the last 20 years, we see a doubling in the proportion of those who have diabetes, at the same time as fewer people live with undiagnosed diabetes,” research fellow Petja Langholz at the University of Tromsø told forskning.no.

The researchers examined the incidence of diabetes in more than 27,000 people who participated in the Tromsø survey from 1994 until 2016. The incidence of diabetes was 2.4% in 1994 and had increased to 5.1% in 2016.

The proportion of undiagnosed diabetes fell from 34% to 21%.

More than 460 million people in the world have diabetes, and many are at risk of developing the disease.

Type 2 diabetes, which is closely linked to overweight, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity, accounts for around 90% of cases.
