Two died in a tanker accident at Stadlandet

The sailor in his 40s who was hospitalized after an accident on board a tanker at Stadlandet on Saturday has died.

 

This is what Ålesund’s hospital said Sunday morning. A man in his 70’s also lost his life in the accident. The two men who died were from the Philippines and Spain, Fjord Shipping’s spokesman Hugo Matre reported to NTB.

The main rescue center of southern Norway was notified of the accident at 04:30 Saturday morning. The ship, called Key Fighter and registered in Malta, was then 13 nautical miles outside of the city.

“We immediately sent a rescue helicopter from Florø, the closest, rescued center,” rescue leader Cecilie Øversveen to NTB.

The helicopter got to the ship just after 5 o’clock. A few minutes later, the two sailors, belonging to a crew of 14, were on their way to Ålesund Hospital.

The oldest of the two was confirmed died a short time after arrival at the hospital.

The men were doing work in a tank when they were found unconscious, states the West police district. It was the crew who had taken them out of the tank.

The ship was on its way from Norway to England when the accident occurred.

According to the police, the two may have been exposed to the toxic gas, hydrogen sulphide, but other that that they can not yet say about the course of events. Both the Maritime Directorate and the Havarikommission have been notified of the accident.
