UK reports 32 deaths after AstraZeneca vaccination
A total of 168 people have been affected by a rare form of a blood clot in the UK after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine, and 32 of them have died.
On Thursday, the British Medicines Agency (MHRA) presented an updated overview of the number of blood clot cases in the wake of vaccination up to April 14. By then, 21.2 million people had received the first dose of the vaccine.
The figures show that the number of deaths has increased by ten since the previous overview was presented on April 5. In addition, a further 68 blood clots have been registered since then.
“Based on this ongoing review, the council maintains that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks in the majority population,” the MHRA stated.
Blood clots
The average age of the 77 people who have suffered a blood clot in the brain after vaccination is 47 years.
In the remaining 91 cases, there are blood clots together with low platelet levels. The average age there is 55 years.
Among the 168 affected people, there are 93 women and 75 men.
“I would expect the actual number of cases per million vaccine doses to be clear soon as these reports stabilize, but it is already clear that this will remain a very rare event,” professor of Pediatrics at the University of Bristol, Adam Finn, said.
