Ukraine: 40 Ukrainian soldiers killed, civilian casualties reported

An adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj says 40 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed after Russia’s attack. There are also reports of alleged civilian casualties, according to Sky News, which quotes an adviser to the president.

Dozens of soldiers are also allegedly wounded.

Furthermore, Sky News reports that Ukraine has cut all diplomatic ties with Russia, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Zelenskyj also asked everyone with military experience to join the defense of Ukraine, adding that the authorities will offer weapons to anyone who wants them.

He urged people to donate blood to help wounded soldiers.

“We will fight for our country,” he noted.

Background: Russian attack on Ukraine

In the middle of the night, around 4 AM Norwegian time, in an extraordinary television address, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia was launching a military operation in Ukraine.

Putin announced the attack on Ukraine during an extraordinary session of the UN Security Council.

Ukraine has closed its airspace to civilian flights. CNN journalists report explosions in Kyiv and at least six other Ukrainian cities.
