The Ukrainian government claims to have killed “about 50 Russian occupiers” in clashes around the country.

The report has not yet been confirmed by independent sources or commented on by Moscow.

“Sjtsjastja is under control. 50 Russian occupiers were killed. Another Russian plane was destroyed in the Kramatorsk district. This is the sixth,” the Ukrainian military wrote on Twitter.

The Russian military leadership has previously denied reports that five Russian planes and a combat helicopter have been shot down in eastern Ukraine.

Russian attack on Ukraine

In the middle of the night, around 4 AM Norwegian time, in an extraordinary television address, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia was launching a military operation in Ukraine.

Putin announced the attack on Ukraine during an extraordinary session of the UN Security Council.

Ukraine has closed its airspace to civilian flights. CNN journalists report explosions in Kyiv and at least six other Ukrainian cities.
