Ukraine claims to have shot down five Russian planes and one attack helicopter in the east of the country.

According to the Ukrainian Defense Forces leadership, the planes and the helicopter were shot down in eastern Ukraine, near the areas controlled by Russian-backed separatists.

The information has not been confirmed by Moscow, which earlier on Thursday rejected a report that a Russian plane had been shot down in Ukraine.

Russia launches attack on Ukraine

In the middle of the night, around 4 AM Norwegian time, in an extraordinary television address, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia was launching a military operation in Ukraine.

Putin announced the attack on Ukraine during an extraordinary session of the UN Security Council.

Ukraine has closed its airspace to civilian flights. CNN journalists report explosions in Kyiv and at least six other Ukrainian cities.
