Ukraine’s nuclear energy agency reports higher levels of radioactivity in the Chernobyl area. Russian forces took over the area on Thursday.

The agency believes that the increase is due to increased activity of heavy military equipment on the ground, which has led to radioactive dust being blown up into the air.

Ukrainian authorities said on Thursday that Russian forces had taken control of the decommissioned nuclear reactor and the surrounding security zone.

A spokesman for the Russian military, Major General Igor Konashenkov, says that the radiation level in the area has remained at a normal level.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been informed of the development by Ukrainian authorities.
