Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj is asking the EU to impose even stricter sanctions on Russia.

“All possibilities for sanctions have not yet been used up. The pressure on Russia must increase,” Zelenskyj tweeted after talking to EU Commission leader Ursula von der Leyen on Friday.

During a hastily-convened crisis meeting on Thursday, EU leaders adopted a comprehensive sanctions package but did not go so far as to throw Russia out of the international banking transaction system SWIFT. Germany was against it.

The details of the new sanctions are not clear, but they are aimed primarily at the Russian banking sector, the energy sector, and the transport sector.

According to von der Leyen, the sanctions affect “70% of the Russian banking market, as well as several state-owned companies, including the defense sector.”
