According to the Taliban, women have been allowed to return to public universities in two of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces.

Since the Taliban took power in August last year, there have been demands that women be allowed to return to schools and universities. When the Taliban last ruled, the women were denied that right.

The Taliban imposed several restrictions on women since taking power in August. Among other things, women are largely not allowed to work outside the health and school sector. The schools have been open to girls up to sixth grade.

On Wednesday, the Taliban announced that public universities in Nangarhar and Kandahar are now open to women. The two provinces have warmer climates and are the first to open universities after winter.

Men are allowed to attend lectures early in the day, while women are allowed to attend in the evening so that they are kept separate. Earlier, the Taliban announced that other universities, including Kabul, will open to both women and men on February 26.
