In a conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyj, US President Joe Biden promised to uphold support and assistance to Ukraine.

“We will continue to provide support and assistance to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people,” Biden said in a statement after the conversation.

The talks took place shortly after Russia attacked Ukraine on Thursday night. Explosions were reported in several places in the country.

In the conversation, Biden condemned what he called “unprovoked and unjustified attacks carried out by Russian military forces.”

Biden added that Zelensky has asked Biden, the leaders of the global community, to stand against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “obvious aggression.”

Russia launches attack on Ukraine

In the middle of the night, around 4 AM Norwegian time, in an extraordinary television address, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia was launching a military operation in Ukraine.

Putin announced the attack on Ukraine during an extraordinary session of the UN Security Council.

Ukraine has closed its airspace to civilian flights. CNN journalists report explosions in Kyiv and at least six other Ukrainian cities.
