Vaccine fraud attempts on the decline in Sweden

Swedish police now receive fewer reports of attempted vaccine fraud cases.

The scammers often offer to help set up vaccinations to gain access to the victims’ money.

Between February and April, 100 such fraud attempts were reported to the Swedish police. In the first two weeks of May, 29 such reports were registered.

“We believe that many people got the message – they now know that they should not identify themselves in telephone conversations about vaccination,” Lotta Mauritzson at the police’s national fraud unit told Swedish Radio Ekot.

Targeted fraud attempts

In the beginning, it was first and foremost older people who were affected, but now younger Swedes are also being targeted by fraudsters.

“In recent weeks, we see that the age of those who report (such fraud attempts) is declining, and it shows that the fraudsters are targeting those who are being offered the vaccine,” Mauritzson said.
