Minister of Finance Trygve Slagsvold Vedum (SP) told the newspaper VG that the plan for a third power cable from Norway to Europe, NorthConnect, will not materialize.

NorthConnect is a planned electricity connection project between Scotland and Norway. It was supposed to have a capacity of 1,400 megawatts, which means that it could carry a maximum of 12.2 terawatt-hours of electricity between the countries annually.

The power cable has been controversial for a long time, and as SP leader, Vedum has previously also been clear that he wants the plan to be shelved.

Postponed before

In March 2020, the Solberg government postponed granting a license for the project because it believed that there was an insufficient basis for making a decision in the licensing case.

The former government first wanted to gain experience from the effects of the current two cables (Nordlink to Germany and North Sea Link, which also goes to Great Britain, more specifically England) on the power system.

Vedum now told VG that no license would be granted.

“That application will not be processed. That project will be buried,” he said.
