Vestland is the county in Norway with the most illegal fishing so far this year. The Norwegian Environmental Protection Agency has confiscated a total of 31 illegal nets in Vestland since the salmon season began.

“The extent of illegal fishing in Western Norway is now at an unacceptably high level. This is theft from the community that can have major consequences for the vulnerable salmon populations,” Arnstein Johnsen in the Norwegian Environmental Protection Agency said.

“The nets we find are often set right at the water surface, just to catch salmon and sea trout. Some of the nets have a size that is suitable for catching larger quantities of salmon, which may indicate that the fishing is financially motivated,” Johnsen said.

The Norwegian Environmental Protection Agency has so far confiscated more than 120 illegal nets nationally this year.

If you discover possible illegal fishing activities, you should contact the Norwegian Environment Agency or the police.
