It is assumed that the omicron variant will become dominant in Europe by mid-January, according to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

“If you look at the time it takes for new cases to double in number, it seems to double every two or three days,” von der Leyen told the European Parliament on Wednesday.

The omicron variant has contributed to the corona infection being on the rise at full speed across Europe, and several countries are setting new infection records with each passing day.

Another pandemic Christmas

“We have been told that we must expect the omicron variant to become the new dominant variant in Europe by mid-January,” she said.

On Twitter, von der Leyen wrote that Europe is facing another Christmas in pandemic mode.

The EU is well prepared to deal with the variant, since 66.6% of Europe’s population is now fully vaccinated against the virus, von der Leyen noted.
