Despite some periods with record amounts of rainfall,  May ended up being both drier and warmer than normal. The average temperature nationwide was 2.1 degrees above normal.

– Nationally, this is a conspicuously high deviation, Jostein Mamen at the Meteorological Institute explains to Yr.
May 2016 will go down in history as the fourth warmest month of May, since Meteorological Institute started their temperature measurements in 1900. Only in 2013, 2002 and 1984 have the temperatures in May been warmer, according to Yr.
Finnmark had the proportionally warmest temperatures , while the warmest day was on Monday this week when Gulsvik Buskerud had 28.2 degrees.
less rainfall
Nationally there were 10 percent less rainfall than what is normal in May. The record levels of precipitations that were measured in eastern Norway at certain points, not least in Hedmark and Oppland, where some monitoring stations received between 200 and 250 percent more rainfall than usual, brings up the average.
Unusually wartm temperatures on Svalbard
May has been an unusually warm month on Svalbard as well. In fact, the average temperature ended up 5.6 degrees higher than normal, with a mean temperature of 1.4 degrees.
Bjørnøya set a new heat record. The average temperature in May was 2.8 degrees, one degree above the previous record from 1960.
This record is not the only one for in recent times for the Arctic sea areas. The average temperature on Svalbard has been above norma for all of the last 66 months, and the climate researcher is concerned about this.
– It’s an incredibly long series. It is natural to link this development to global warming. That happens more quickly in the Arctic than anywhere else, Mamen says.
