Western Police District: Strong increase in number of reported sexual offenses registered in 2021

Despite the fact that the number of reported offenses in the Western Police District decreased by 5% last year, the number of reported sexual offenses increased by 26% last year.

New figures from the Western Police District show that 25,653 offenses were reported last year. There are 1,464 fewer cases than in 2020 – the lowest number in the police district in question in five years.

The figures show that there is a decrease in most types of crime – with the exception of sexual offenses and violations of the environmental law.

The number of reported sexual offenses increased by 26% – from 745 in 2020 to 937 reported cases last year. The police state that they see a disturbing development in the sexual abuse of children. A total of 365 such cases were reported last year, compared with 288 the year before.

Environmental crime

In cases involving environmental crime, the number of reported cases increased from 370 in 2020 to 398 last year.

The Western Police District states that they see a decrease in reported cases involving violence. Among other things, the figures for inflicting bodily harm and bodily injury decreased, which the police assume may be related to the fact that nightlife in parts of the year was completely or partially closed down due to the corona restrictions.

Now that society has opened up, the police expect an increase in the number of such cases.
