Seven out of ten Norwegian municipalities fear torrential rain and floods more than heat waves and droughts, a climate change survey that asked municipalities what they fear the most shows.

The survey that Vestlandsforskning has carried out for KS shows that 22% of the municipalities surveyed fear torrential rain will affect them to a very large extent, while 48% answer that they, to a large extent, fear torrential rain will affect the municipality, Kommunal Rapport writes.

Floods are also high on the list of climate change-related fears. Almost all of the country’s municipalities have already made climate preparations within their water and sewage systems.

Drought and heat waves rank lowest in the survey. 150 of 356 Norwegian municipalities participated in the survey.

Three out of four municipalities say they lack the staff to address climate-related challenges and 70% answer that finances are an obstacle to making the necessary adjustments. These figures have risen sharply since the last time the survey was conducted in 2017.
