WHO not sure whether vaccines can end the corona pandemic

The World Health Organization is pessimistic about the vaccines’ ability to end the corona pandemic, as new variants pose a problem to herd immunity.

In May, the WHO stated that the pandemic would be over when at least 70% of people have been vaccinated.

When asked if 70% was still a target or if more people need to be vaccinated, WHO’s leader for Europe, Hans Kluge, admitted on Friday that the situation has changed due to new variants, such as the delta variant.

“I think it brings us to the point where the goal of the vaccination is first and foremost to prevent serious illness and mortality,” he said, comparing the developments with the flu virus.

“If we take the fact that COVID continues to mutate and be present into consideration, in the same way as the flu, then we must adapt the vaccination strategy gradually,” he said.
