Risk groups should receive an extra dose of the corona vaccine, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends.

According to studies, the effect of the vaccines decreases over time, and the decline is significant, especially in older people, Alejandro Cravioto, head of the WHO’s vaccine expert group SAGE, stated, according to Reuters.

The WHO’s advice is related to the third dose of the corona vaccines taken in two doses, such as Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZeneca. For vaccines taken in one dose, such as Janssen, a second dose is recommended.

Several countries, including Norway, have already begun to administer booster doses. In Norway, a third dose is considered the most important measure against the increasing infection, which has led to a sharp increase in the number of hospital admissions of corona patients.

Vaccine manufacturer Pfizer/BioNTech announced on Wednesday that their corona vaccine provides good protection against the omicron variant after a third dose.
