A woman in her 50s was found dead in her home in Tana on Wednesday. A man in his 50s has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault resulting in death.

“We are at an early stage in the investigation and can therefore not share details about the death or the basis for the charges. The accused has explained his version of events to the police,” section leader Torstein Pettersen in the Finnmark Police District stated in a press release.

According to the police, it is unclear how the woman died. The circumstances at the scene made the police decide to arrest a man in his 50s and charge him with aggravated assault resulting in the death of the woman. There is a relationship between the deceased and the accused, the police added.

Investigation in progress

“We are carrying out a broad investigation to clarify whether the death is due to a criminal act or has a natural explanation. That is why we are reluctant to provide information so early in the investigation,” Pettersen added.

The court decided that the man should be remanded in custody for two weeks with a letters and visits ban.

“The accused does not admit criminal guilt and has appealed the sentence. He has given an explanation to the court and the police,” the man’s defender, lawyer Hans Arne Nysæter, told NTB.

Nysæther had no other comments on the case.
