A total of 15% of the members in violent extremist circles are women. That is far more than researchers have previously assumed.

The new report, funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers and carried out by the Swedish Institute for Future Studies, shows that women have a far more active role in the environment and criminal acts than research has previously shown.

The report is based on quantitative surveys in Sweden. The women mapped are members of left-wing extremist, right-wing extremist, and violent Islamist groups.

The crimes the women are suspected of are often acts of violence.

A total of 60% of left-wing extremist women have been suspected of crime. For women in violent Islamist circles or right-wing extremist circles, the figures are 37% and 44%, respectively, NTB reports.
