Next week, Oslo will begin the mass vaccination of 12-15-year-olds, Health Councilor Robert Steen noted. The vaccination will take place in the schools.

On Friday, City Council chief Raymond Johansen stated that Oslo hopes to finish vaccinating the 12-15-year-olds before the autumn holidays, which begin on Monday, October 4.

Health Councilor Robert Steen now says that the first step will be taken already in week 37, which is next week – provided that the Municipality receives enough doses of the Pfizer vaccine.

“In week 37, we will start the effort aimed at 12-15-year-olds, and then I hope we will be done before the autumn holidays,” Steen told NTB.

According to Steen, the Municipality is already in the process of obtaining consent from parents of children and young people between the ages of 12 and 15. According to his estimate, there are around 20,000 of them in Oslo.

New deliveryies expected

Steen says that Oslo has ordered multiple vaccine batches of the Pfizer vaccine from the National Institute of Public Health (FHI) and expects to have these delivered in week 37. If that happens, the Municipality will be able to start vaccinating 12-15-year-olds.

“I guess we will get what we need. The Minister of Health has said that there are enough vaccines, so I trust that it is true,” Steen said.

The FHI has recommended the Pfizer vaccine to 12-15-year-olds because there is more experience of using it on such young people. Initially, everyone born between 2006 and 2008 will be offered one vaccine dose, as well as everyone from cohort 2009 as soon as they have turned twelve.

Plans for vaccination in schools

The practical implementation of the vaccination is left to each individual school, Steen noted.

He added that the Municipality envisages two ways to do this – either whole school classes will be accompanied to the local vaccine center to get the vaccine at the same time, or employees at the local vaccine center will come to the school to vaccinate, for example, an entire school grade.

“Either the students come to the vaccine centers, or the vaccine centers come to the schools. Here, local decisions are planned,” Steen explained.
