The weather service Yr expands the offer and includes air quality in the alerts.

Researchers at the Department of Meteorology have developed the warning model, which shows the local air pollution in the present and 24 hours ahead.

– The model combines the weather forecast and emissions to calculate the air quality. This is how we can cover the whole Norway, down to as small an area as 50 meters, says senior scientist Bruce Rolstad Denby at the Meteorological Institute.

Air pollution is a problem in the winter. Particularly sulfur dust and nitrogen dioxide which pollutes locally.

The alert is designed to target vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, children and those with asthma and respiratory ailments.

The service is initially available online, says the Meteorological Institute.
