As long as people loses their lives in the Mediterranean or in the desert, we are not well enough prepared to deal with the refugee and migration crisis, EU’s head of foreign policy, Federica Mogherini, says.
But she believes that the EU is on the right track.
– Last year there were only a few member states which had responsibility. Today we finally see that the EU is trying to deal with a complicated and big problem. So we have started heading in the right direction, says Mogherini said.
Thousands are saved
She points out that thousands of lives have been saved in the Mediterranean.
– I hope our friends around the world can work together to do more to save lives, she says, on their way to a conference on foreign policy cooperation between the EU and Norway with Foreign Minister Brende (H) at the Nobel Peace Center.
According to the UN 10,000 people have died in the Mediterranean Sea on their way to Europe since the beginning of 2014. But Mogherini stressed that many also have lost their lives in the desert on their way to Europe.
– We do not normally take those who die in the desert into consideration. But that is one of the things that we have to deal with, she says.
