This week, a new semester starts at most universities and colleges in Norway. A total of 10,000 students are still on the waiting list for student housing.

The number of people on the waiting list decreased from 16,421 on August 2 to 10,333 on August 16, Samskipnadsrådet.no writes.

The numbers are falling because students either move into student housing or find housing on the private market.

The leader of the Norwegian student organization, Tuva Todnem Lund, says she is concerned with the fact that more than 10,000 students are still waiting for student housing.

“These students must and look for housing, often in an unknown city, instead of being able to take part in the start of studies. We need more student housing to be built now to prevent such queues in the years to come,” Lund said.

Minister of Research and Higher Education Henrik Asheim (H) stated that student housing is being built around the country – and that more will be built.
