It is 30% more expensive to rent a two-room apartment in Oslo than in the rest of the country, figures from Statistics Norway (SSB) show. Students demand an increase in student support.
The price for renting a two-room apartment in Oslo and Bærum amounted to NOK 12,310 per month in 2021. That is 29% above the national average, SSB writes. In Bergen and Trondheim, the average price for a two-room home was NOK 9,510 and NOK 9,780 in 2021, respectively.
“This year’s figures from Statistics Norway show that 73% of student support goes to renting housing – even more in Oslo,” Tuva Todnem Lund, leader of the Norwegian Student Organization (NSO), told NTB.
According to NSO, 51% of Norwegian students rent housing in the private rental market. With an annual student grant from Lånekassen of NOK 126,000, most funds go directly to rent.
Students ask for more support
“You do not need a financial education to see that student support must be increased and more (student) housing must be built,” the NSO leader stated, emphasizing the requirement that the student support should be up to about 30,000 NOK.
The figures from the SSB also show that there are large differences within the cities when it comes to prices. In Bergen, it is estimated that rental prices vary by around 13% from the most expensive in the central Bergenhus area to other districts. The situation is similar in Oslo.
