Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen says her goal is for no asylum seekers to come to Denmark.

“We must make sure that not too many people come to our country. Otherwise, our unity can not exist. It has already been challenged,” Fredriksen said in a speech to the Danish parliament (Folketing) on Friday.

She announced a tighter asylum policy and said that the government’s goal is zero asylum seekers.

“We can not give a promise of zero asylum seekers, but we can set up the same vision as before the election, namely that we want a new asylum system, and then we’ll do what we can to introduce it,” Fredriksen said.

Last year, 1,547 asylum seekers were registered in Denmark, the lowest number since 1998.

The number of asylum seekers coming to Denmark in 2020 decreased by 43% compared to 2019. At that time, 2,716 asylum seekers were registered.
