The European Commission has formally approved Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for use in the EU and Norway, the Commission’s president Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday afternoon.

This is the second COVID-19 vaccine that the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has recommended for approval.

The vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech is already approved in the EU and Norway.

Norway is covered by both the EMA’s approval and the procurement agreement between the EU and Moderna.

Two doses required

Norway has secured 1.9 million doses of the Moderna vaccine.

Like Pfizer / BioNTech’s vaccine, Modern’s vaccine must be taken in two doses at a three to four weeks interval.

Moderna’s vaccine has an efficiency of 94.1%.

A total of 30,000 people took part in the test period, where half received a placebo vaccine, and the other half received the real vaccine.
