A week has passed since the Church of Norway called for an end to oil exploration. Since then, more than 1,700 people have left the Church, the newspaper Vårt Land reports.

“It is natural that the decision that was made elicits some reactions of this type. At the same time, it is important for us to be clear that the Church does not see those who work in the petroleum sector in Norway as a problem. They make a very big effort for value creation for Norwegian society,” Olav Fykse Tveit, president of the Church of Norway, stated.

Already on the first day after the decision, 434 people left the Church, according to the newspaper Nettavisen.
