Both sides in the war between Ukraine and Russia accuse each other of war crimes. There is broad agreement in NATO that war crimes in Ukraine must be documented.

“We must document the accusations of war crimes in Butsja and elsewhere. It is important for all parties to put in place an independent review,” Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt (AP) told NTB.

On Thursday, she attended the NATO Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Brussels, where she met, among others, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba in private for the first time since February 19.

“He told me about what he had seen when it comes to the atrocities of the war. He has family and friends in Ukraine,” Huitfeldt noted.

When Ukrainian forces recaptured the small town of Butsja last Saturday, photos showed dead civilians in the streets. Ukraine accused Russian forces of committing war crimes.

On Thursday, reports appeared of a video showing Ukrainian soldiers killing Russian prisoners of war. The video has been verified by the New York Times.
