The Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority says there is no immediate danger of a radioactive release related to Chernobyl’s power outage that could affect Norway.

The Directorate for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (DSA) told NTB that it was notified of problems with the power supply to the Chernobyl plant on Wednesday.

“We do not see any immediate danger of discharges that could affect us in the current situation, but at the same time, this, of course, shows the problems that exist at the facilities in connection with acts of war. We are very worried and follow this closely,” acting department director Ingar Amundsen in the DSA stated.

No operational reactor

He emphasized that there is no operational reactor at Chernobyl but says there is a lot of nuclear fuel at the plant that needs to be cooled.

“But the most important thing in the current situation is that we see that even without power supply, there is no immediate danger of discharge as a result of the power outage.

“This is due to the safety measures that have been taken, which means that the fuel storage will manage without electricity for a while before problems arise,” Amundsen said.

The DSA is following the situation closely, especially at Zaporizhia and Chernobyl, which are said to have been taken over by the Russians. They call the situation at the facilities “unclear.”

“We are concerned about the situation, especially with the fact that the radiation protection authorities do not have the opportunity to control the nuclear facilities the Russians have captured, and that the operators who operate the facilities are not able to replace the personnel. It is important that they can do this in a good and quality-assured way, but in a situation like now, that becomes difficult,” Amundsen added.
