There were almost twice as many reports related to the abuse of children under 14 in Oslo this year compared to last year. This year, 104 reports have been submitted.

According to the newspaper Dagbladet, the number of reports related to the abuse of children under the age of 14 in Oslo rose from 55 to 104 from 2020 to 2021.

The difference is even greater if you compare the figures with the previous years. In 2019, the number was 37, while in 2018, 2017, and 2016 it was 33, 43, and 42, respectively.

Save the Children was one of the many organizations that warned early on after Norway closed down in March last year that children could be at risk. They warned that children and young people could experience an increase in violence and abuse during the lockdown.

Sydgård: All children have the right to be protected from abuse

“In addition to the reports that the police received, we know that there are also large ‘dark’ (i.e., unreported) numbers. The authorities must take this seriously; all children have the right to be protected from abuse,” the leader of the Norway program at Save the Children, Monica Sydgård, said.

However, it is difficult to determine whether the increase can be related to the pandemic and the lockdown, according to the police.

“There is an increase in internet-related abuse. In recent years, the police have increased their focus and improved digital competence to detect this type of abuse. This year alone, the investigation section for sexual offenses has had two cases with a total of almost 100 children as victims, as young as seven years old,” head of the investigation section for sexual offenses in Oslo, Ann Kristin Grosberghaugen, said.
