The agreement, which covers health expenses for Norwegian students, posted workers, and pensioners in the USA, is set to expire in the autumn.

“From September 12, the relevant groups should buy private health insurance or pay for the treatment and apply to Helfo for reimbursement afterward, if they need health care in the US,” department director Stein Mathisen in the department for health reimbursements in the Norwegian Directorate of Health stated in a press release.

According to the National Insurance Act, the right to have expenses for necessary health services covered is the same as before.

“But more people will have increased expenses for insurance. The expenses will vary from case to case and place of study to place of study,” Mathisen added.

Norway is ending the special agreement that has been in place for many years with the insurance agent Optum due to a decision by the European Court of Justice on the transfer of personal data to countries outside the EU and the EEA.
