Sweden’s governing party, the Social Democrats, states that it will decide on the party’s position on a possible Swedish NATO membership by May 24.
The decision will determine whether Sweden can submit a NATO application already this summer.
On Friday, the party leadership and the party’s group met in the Swedish parliament (Riksdag) to discuss whether the party should continue to support Sweden being non-aligned.
The party leadership has to decide whether the line should be changed.
Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine has sparked a discussion in both Sweden and Finland about whether the countries should apply for NATO membership.
