The world’s first electric environmental boat of its kind was christened by 14-year-old environmental activist and godmother Tora Elgsaas this summer.
The boat is named “Pelikan II,” and is currently picking up rubbish in the inner Oslo Fjord area.
The boat is specially designed for efficient collection of liquid rubbish and is picking up waste in the inner Oslo Fjord.
The emission-free boat is the first of its kind and was built by Grovfjord Mekaniske Verksted.
Pelikan II replaced Pelikan, which has removed 1,500 tonnes of rubbish and driftwood from the Port of Oslo in the last 30 years.
Environmental activist Tora Elgsaas thinks it is inspiring that the focus has been put on environmentally friendly technology.
“Adults have a responsibility”
“Many young people fear that in a few years there will be more plastic than fish in the sea.
“Today’s adults have a responsibility to pass on healthy fjords to the next generations,” she said in a press release in August.
554 kW batteries ensure that the boat can be in full working mode for eight to twelve hours.
The batteries can be recharged in two hours.
The hydraulic pick-up basket at the front, with a capacity of 350 kilos, can efficiently pick up rubbish from the sea.
The price of the boat amounts to NOK 23 million.
