Directed by Joachim Trier, “The Worst Person in the World” has been selected to represent Norway at the Oscars in Hollywood next year. The massive film event, also known as the Academy Awards, is set to take place in March of 2022.

Trier’s latest film attracted attention – and received very positive reviews – after its international premiere during the Cannes Film Festival in July of 2021. Main actress Renate Reinsve received Best Female Actress at the prestigious fest for her interpretation of the character Julie.

The Worst Person in the World premiered in Norway on October 15, and has already been seen by 85,000 people.

“The journey this film has made – from winning a historic award at Cannes, and participating in festivals around the world, to having sales that will bring it across the globe – facilitates a completely unique opportunity to take it all the way,” said Kjersti Mo, Director at the Norwegian Film Institute, when she announced the decision.

Working toward a nomination

“Renate carries this film on her shoulders. So much of the credit goes to you [Renate],” Trier said when he, together with Reinsve and other production members, commented on the decision at the Norwegian Film Institute.

“But let me also say a big thank you to the Norwegian Oscar Committee for giving us a chance to go to America and try to be nominated for an Oscar. It is something we want to attempt, and something we have enough self-confidence to believe may be possible,” said Trier.

One of three shortlisted films

The Worst Person in the World was shortlisted together with Betrayed, directed by Eirik Svensson, and Ninjababy, by Yngvild Sve Flikke.

The Norwegian Oscar Committee – which consists of eight representatives from industry organizations, the Film Critics Association, and the Norwegian Film Institute – decides which films can be candidates for an Oscar nomination in the category Best International Film.

The last time Norway won an award during the Oscars was in 2007, when director Toril Kove won Best Animated Short Film with The Danish Poet. In 1951, Thor Heyerdahl won the Oscar fot Best Documentary with Kon-Tiki.
