The 2021 Ossietzky Prize has been awarded to advocates of free speech from Afghanistan.

“Afghan speakers have been the cornerstone of the country’s democratic development. We see this, among other things, through an increased number of book publications, newspapers, and radio and TV channels in recent decades. With this year’s Ossietzky Prize, we want to honor these brave people,” said Kjersti Løken Stavrum, leader of Norwegian PEN.

The term ‘speakers’ includes activists, journalists, writers, poets, filmmakers, editors, photographers, artists, and others who, through peaceful means, have promoted freedom of expression.

“Afghan workers’ work for a more tolerant, open, and inclusive society has contributed to the flourishing of civil society, increased freedom of the press, and has prompted the strengthening of girls’ and women’s participation in society,” says Løken Stavrum in a press release.

Abdul Samay Hamed, author and leader of Afghan PEN, will receive the award on behalf of Afghan speakers at the House of Literature in Oslo on November 15.

Afghanistan is still one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists. Since 2004, more than 80 killings of journalists have been reported in the nation.

Norwegian PEN is Norway’s branch of PEN International, the world’s largest organization for writers and freedom of expression. It was founded in 1921.
