11 million children will die of pneumonia by 2030

11 million children under five years of age will die of pneumonia by 2030 according to a study.

 

More than 880,000 children, mostly under two years old,died of pneumonia in 2016.

Based on forecasts of today’s trends, more than 10.8 million children under five years old will die of the disease over the next twelve years.The study was conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore,USA,and the Redd Barna relief organization.

It is generally only the older population in developed countries affected by the disease. In less developed countries,mostly children are affected.Among the countries that will be affected are Nigeria and India,where 1.7 million children will die from the disease according to the study. 700,000 children will die in Pakistan and 635,000 in the Democratic Republic of Congo according to the report.

The researchers also concluded that 4.1 million children can be rescued if the vaccination program is stepped up and more people get access to antibiotics.
