A total of 351 pregnant women did not reach the clinic in 2018, and from that total 171 gave birth during transport, shows new numbers.

In addition, 153 gave birth at home and 27 elsewhere, new statistics show from the Medical Birth Registry at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.

In 2018, a total of 55,908 children were born in Norway, of whom 0.6 percent were unplanned births outside medical institutions.

“The proportion of unplanned births outside medical institution has been stable since 1999. The proportion on a national basis has always been 0.6–0.7 per cent of the births,” says consultant Kristine Stangenes from the Medical Birth Registry in the Public Health Register.
