The government sets aside NOK 78 million in the state budget for 2020 to create 38 new internship positions for doctors in Northern Norway.

Parts of Northern Norway are experiencing recruitment challenges for doctors, especially in smaller hospitals and with GPs. The 38 new LIS1 positions will improve physician recruitment in Northern Norway and will mean an increase in the number of positions by more than 22 %, Health Minister Bent Høie (H) said in a press release on Friday.

Northern Norway currently has 170 LIS1 positions and will receive 208 such positions after the increase.

It has not been determined exactly where in Northern Norway the positions will be. The positions will be advertised in the autumn of 2020 and the spring of 2021.

The government’s state budget proposal for 2020 will be presented on October 7th.
