Imports of goods in the months before Christmas usually provide insight into popular Christmas presents for the year. According to Statistics Norway (SSB), skiing and snowboarding gifts are all the rage in 2021.
Although electronic gifts such as mobile phones, speakers, and smartwatches seem to be at the top of the wish list this year – based on import figures – Statistics Norway (SSB) believes that there is a new trend in more sporty Christmas gifts this year compared to previous years.
Imports of skis and snowboards have had a sharp upswing from last year.
After several years of decline, 63% more alpine skis have been imported this year than last year, a total of 83,000 pairs.
More than 75,000 cross-country, mountain, and other skis have also been imported in the last three months before Christmas this year, which is 15% more than last year at that time.
Although snowboards are not as popular (only 9,673 snowboards), that is still an increase of 37% from last year.
For the time being, the weather forecasts indicate that large parts of the country should prepare for a white – and cold – Christmas celebration.
As mentioned, electronic gadgets continue to be the most popular gifts. Imports of smartwatches, for example, have increased by 35%this year.
Most of the Christmas trees sold in Norway have been felled in the country, but 136,000 real trees have been imported this year, compared to 120,000 last year.
However, much of the Christmas decorations are probably made abroad – the import of such decorations is valued at a total of NOK 294 million.
