Last year, about 60,900 electric bicycles were imported to Norway – an increase of 42 percent from the previous year.

More than half of the bikes come from China, according to recent figures from Statistics Norway (Statistics Norway).

“In the next places on the list of the largest exporters of electric bicycles to Norway, we find Germany and Taiwan. That is the same picture as the year before,” says chief executive officer Kjersti Fjærtoft Fossanger of Statistics Norway.

While electric bicycles increased by 42 percent last year, it only increased by 3 per cent for ordinary bicycles. However, far more ordinary bicycles than electric bicycles are imported – around 335,000 bicycles were imported during 2018.

“Here too, China is clearly importing the most. About 60 percent of imports of regular bicycles last year came from China, while just over 20 percent came from Taiwan. Other important bicycle exporters to Norway are Indonesia and Cambodia,” says Fjærtoft Fossanger.
