After the announcement that stores in Viken and Gran have to close due to the new corona measures, the store chain Nille decided to lay off even more employees. Almost 1,000 employees will be affected.

“A total of 125 out of our 344 stores are now closed. This means that almost 1000 store employees have either been laid off or will be laid off shortly,” Nille director Kjersti Hobøl told news bureau NTB.

All the chain’s store employees in Oslo were already laid off after the Municipality closed all independent stores from March 1. By then, the shops in the shopping centers were already closed.

On Monday, the government also chose to close shops in Viken county and Gran. The shops are also closed in Bodø.

Half of the employees laid off

Newspaper Nettavisen first mentioned the layoffs in Nille.

With almost 1,000 redundancies, almost half of the chain’s employees are now temporarily out of work.

Hobøl does not currently have an overview of exactly how many new people will be laid off due to the lockdown that was imposed from Tuesday and until April 12.

“Even though a third of our stores are now closed, the loss in terms of turnover is much greater than a third. For us, Easter is also a big season, and we have a lot of seasonal goods, so it will hit hard,” she said.

Master Green lays off 350 workers

The flower shop chain Mester Grønn, for its part, must close 41 shops and lay off 350 employees after the lockdown of Viken and Gran.

Nettavisen writes that the Europris chain has had to close around 80 stores. Before the government ordered the shops in Viken to close on Monday, around 200 of the chain’s employees were laid off, but it is not yet clear how many new workers will now have to be laid off.

The sports chain XXL has had to close 16 of 37 department stores in Norway due to local measures, out of which 14 are in Oslo and Viken, one in Bodø, and one in Tønsberg.

XXL does not have preliminary figures on how many employees will be laid off after the lockdown in Viken.
