Asker Municipality sends 1.77 million kroner to wrong account, doesn’t get money back: “Almost unbelievable”

Asker Municipality mistakenly deposited NOK 1.77 million in the account of a private individual. Now, the Municipality is struggling to get the money back, and the recipient has been reported.

This week, Chief Financial Officer Randi Sandli in Asker briefed announced what she characterized as a “very unfortunate and serious matter.” 

The Municipality sent NOK 1.77 million to a person in Asker by mistake.

Now, the Municipality is struggling to get the money back, and the person in question has been reported for gross embezzlement, newspaper Budstikka writes.

The recipient confirmed that he had registered the transfer from the Municipality but thought it was funding related to his application for a loan. 

In a letter to the Municipality, the person who received the money stated that he lost NOK 1.2 million on stock speculation.

“It is almost unbelievable. There are a number of unfortunate and quite extreme coincidences here,” Mayor Lene Conradi (H) noted.
