5,000 passengers can claim money back from Norwegian airlines, said The Consumer Council – which agrees with the airline that around 20 of the cancellations this summer were within their control.

– This is a lot for those who are not entitled by standard compensation. Strikes and extreme weather are the only reasons planes must stand on the ground, among a few exceptions, says Ingeborg Flønes, director of Consumer Council.

The regulations are part of the reason for the meeting with Norwegian, to gain better insight into what information the company gave its passengers as many flights were canceled earlier this summer. According to EU regulations, airlines have an information requirement when such incidents occur.

– Norwegian seems to agree with the Consumer Council that around 20 percent of cancellations were within the company’s control, and we have different views on individual cases, says Flønes.
