The police expelled five Romanian strawberry pickers who were on their way into Norway from Sweden.

The incident happened on the border at Bjørnfjell in Nordland, the police wrote on Twitter, after authorities realized that the Romanians had employment contracts for strawberry picking.

“As far as we know, the season for strawberry picking is over,” operations manager Kjetil Kaalaas in Nordland police district told news bureau NTB.

The strawberry season in Norway usually lasts from June to August.

Infection control

Kaalaas could not give further details about what the employment contract contained or how it was designed.

He only said that the police expelled them as soon as they realized that it was about strawberry picking.

He says the expulsion happened for infection control reasons.

“It’s all about the coronavirus. Romania is part of the EU, and working immigrants usually have free access to Norway,” the operations manager concluded.
