From 2019 to 2020, the number of recipients of financial social assistance in Norway decreased by 4.3%. The sum of the payments was reduced by 2.3% in the same period.

In total, about 124,400 people received financial social assistance in 2020, which is a reduction of 4.3% compared with the previous year.

The largest decline in the number of social assistance recipients was in the age group 25–29 years, where the proportion fell by just under 6%, according to figures from Statistics Norway (SSB).

At the same time, the total sum of the payments for social assistance has also decreased. From 2019 to 2020, payments fell by 2.3% to just over NOK 6.8 billion. According to the SSB, this development is partly related to a significant decline in the group that has received social assistance while participating in the introductory program for immigrants. From 2019 to 2020, the decline in this group was almost 29%.

Among those who received social assistance in 2020, 40% were single men – the largest group among social assistance recipients. The proportion of single women was 23%.
